Meghalaya: Three Men Get 20 Years RI for 2013 Shillong Rape Case
Shillong – A special court in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing three men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each for the heinous rape of a 16-year-old girl that occurred way back in 2013. The pronouncement was made on Thursday by Special Judge (POCSO) MK Lyngdoh, who also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on each of the convicted individuals.
The convicted men have been identified as Raj Roy, Ashit Chanda, and Prasenjit Das. Officials confirmed that the trio were found guilty of “repeated sexual assault” on the minor, an ordeal that dates back over a decade. The case came to light in 2013 when the victim’s father lodged an FIR at the Sadar Police Station in Shillong, alleging the grave sexual assault of his daughter. Following the complaint, the police promptly arrested the three accused. In a further measure of justice, the court has also directed the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, Shillong, to ensure a compensation of ₹3 lakh is paid to the victim’s family, offering some solace after their prolonged fight for justice.
