Meghalaya to Build India’s First Dedicated Slalom Course, Aims to be Water Sports Hub

SHILLONG: In a landmark decision poised to revolutionise India’s water sports landscape, the Meghalaya government has greenlit the creation of the country’s only dedicated slalom course. This groundbreaking project, a major boost for adventure sports and tourism, will see a state-of-the-art facility developed along the scenic Umtham River in the Ri Bhoi district. The state cabinet has approved the acquisition of 14.6 acres of land for the project, which will be carried out with an investment of ₹21 crore. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma hailed the initiative as a significant step towards establishing Meghalaya as a pioneer in specialised sports infrastructure.

The Umtham River location is no stranger to the world of water sports. Its natural topography and flow have already proven to be a fertile ground for athletic talent, with Meghalaya’s athletes training here to secure five medals at the last National Games. With this new, dedicated course, the state aims to take that success to the next level. The comprehensive development plan for the facility goes beyond just the slalom course itself. According to the Chief Minister, the project also includes an extensive tree plantation drive across 8-9 acres of the acquired land, highlighting a commitment to environmental sustainability.

This initiative is set to fill a crucial void in India’s sporting ecosystem. Currently, aspiring slalom athletes have to travel abroad or rely on makeshift facilities to hone their skills. The new course will provide them with a world-class training ground right here at home. This strategic move is part of Meghalaya’s larger vision to leverage its numerous rivers and favourable terrain to become India’s premier hub for water sports. The government expects the facility to attract national and international competitions, driving tourism, creating local employment, and potentially grooming future Olympic champions for the country.
