Meghalaya to Implement New Measures to Tackle Drug Abuse in West Shillong

Northeast Desk, 10th September: Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced a series of interventions to address drug abuse and peddling in West Shillong, a significant concern for the state. Areas such as Mawprem, Jhalupara, Lama Villa, Sunny Hills, Lumdiengjri, and Barapathar are included in this constituency.

In a recent meeting with senior officials from police, social welfare, and law departments, Lyngdoh discussed strategies to combat the drug menace. The proposed measures include the establishment of Village Defence Parties (VDP) to enhance security and counter drug-related activities.

Additionally, there is a proposal to extend the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to cover the Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB) area to facilitate resident registration. These steps are aimed at bolstering the fight against drug abuse in the affected areas.
