Meghalaya to Implement Smart Meter Project, Explore Alternative Route Around Umiam Dam

Northeast Desk, 13th September: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has announced the state’s plans to implement the smart meter project as per Central government directives. Speaking to reporters, Mondal said that approximately 800 meter readers are expected to be deployed for the project. He emphasized that the Centre has mandated the use of smart meters to improve efficiency in power management.

In addition to the smart meter initiative, the minister revealed that the government is exploring an alternative route bypassing the Umiam dam for vehicles travelling to Shillong. This comes in response to safety concerns surrounding the Umiam dam, where retrofitting work was recently completed.

Mondal stated that assistance from Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has been requested to address these issues and ensure public safety.
