Meghalaya to Resume Long-Pending Shillong-Dawki Road Repairs Following Heavy Rainfall Disruptions

Northeast, August 18, 2024 —The long-delayed repair work on the Shillong-Dawki road is set to resume soon, as Meghalaya officials confirmed, following severe disruptions caused by incessant rainfall across the state. The much-needed repairs have been stalled, significantly affecting the region’s connectivity.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong previously stated that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) had issued three key project packages: from Umshyrpi Bridge to Upper Shillong, from Mylliem to Pynursla, and from Lower Pynursla to Dawki. While there has been notable progress on the section up to Upper Shillong, the ongoing heavy rains have severely hampered the repair efforts.

Despite the weather challenges, work on the road towards Pynursla has been progressing, with officials successfully cutting sections of the earth at several locations. However, the rain has widely impacted these efforts as well.

The final stretch of the road leading to Dawki, including the construction of the Dawki bridge, is still pending. According to NHIDCL officials, once completed, this final section of the Shillong-Dawki road will feature four lanes, significantly improving connectivity and reducing travel time in the region. The state is hopeful that the resumption of repairs will restore the vital infrastructure and support the local economy.
