Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association Calls for Removal of NEHU Senior Administrators Over Alleged Irregularities
Shillong, Meghalaya – The Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA-NEHU) has joined escalating calls for the removal of three senior administrators at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), citing significant concerns over their competence and administrative conduct.
The association specifically demands the termination of Registrar Col (Retd) Omkar Singh and two recently appointed Deputy Registrars. MeTTA-NEHU’s stance aligns with earlier demands from the university’s students’ union (NEHUSU) and the teachers’ association (NEHUTA).
In a strongly worded statement, MeTTA-NEHU highlighted what it claims are irregularities in recent appointments, singling out the selection of Amit Gupta as Deputy Registrar. The association stated, “A mediocre [candidate] who has no experience in University administration has been appointed as Deputy Registrar,” arguing that qualified candidates from state government departments were disregarded in favor of lesser-qualified candidates.
Controversy also surrounds recent hiring practices for the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). MeTTA-NEHU alleges that “many qualified candidates were not called for the interview, whereas candidates who were not qualified were appointed,” raising concerns over transparency in recruitment.
Further issues stem from the alleged unfamiliarity of the senior officials with university policies and procedures, which has reportedly hindered official communications. MeTTA-NEHU stated, “We are deeply concerned about the irregularities and inconsistencies in the functioning of these officers who lack knowledge of the rules, regulations, and administrative procedures.”
The association’s call for action adds momentum to the growing demand for reform within NEHU’s administration, underscoring the need for experienced and transparent leadership in the university’s operations.
