Meghalaya: Tura Set for Major Facelift with Rs 500 Crore Development Push

Tura: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious development package exceeding Rs 500 crore for Tura, marking one of the most substantial infrastructure investments the town has seen in recent memory. The announcement, made during a public interaction at the Police Parade Ground, comes as the state gears up to host the National Games 2027, with Tura slated to be a key venue.

The comprehensive package, detailed by CM Sangma at the CM Connect programme organised by the Tura Municipal Board, prioritises both sports infrastructure and administrative facilities, catering to immediate community needs and the state’s sporting aspirations. While projects worth Rs 260.45 crore have already received sanction, additional investments are set to propel the total outlay beyond the half-thousand-crore mark.

A significant chunk of the investment is earmarked for sports infrastructure. The centrepiece is the PA Sangma Stadium, which has secured Rs 127.7 crore for its development. Complementing this will be a sports hostel, with a detailed project report for Rs 73.74 crore already submitted, designed to accommodate athletes. Furthermore, ongoing upgradation work at the PA Togan Athletic Stadium, valued at Rs 48.5 crore, will bolster the town’s capacity for track and field events. The planned Sunny Hills Indoor Hall, a Rs 18.9 crore investment, promises international-standard facilities for badminton and table tennis.

Beyond the sporting arena, the development plan includes substantial administrative and hospitality infrastructure. A new additional secretariat building, estimated at Rs 160 crore, is a flagship project with tenders expected to commence in August 2025. Construction is already underway for a convention centre sanctioned at Rs 52 crore and a hospitality complex worth Rs 15 crore, both aimed at enhancing Tura’s capacity to host large-scale events and conferences.

Chief Minister Sangma underscored the grassroots approach taken for the development plan, stating that the public meeting aimed to address grievances while simultaneously outlining schemes for both South and North Tura. This significant shift in infrastructure investment, with the National Games 2027 acting as a powerful catalyst, is expected to transform Tura, solidifying its position as a prominent administrative centre and sporting hub in the northeastern region. Local residents present at the interaction raised various concerns regarding existing infrastructure and civic amenities, which officials assured would be addressed within the broader development framework.
