Meghalaya: Two Men Convicted for Child Sexual Offenses in Shillong, Sentenced to Jail

Shillong: In two separate rulings on March 18, the Court of Special Judge (POCSO) in Shillong convicted and sentenced two men for child sexual offenses, reinforcing the judiciary’s firm stance against crimes targeting minors.

Maitshaphrang Kharmawlong was sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additionally, he received a three-year sentence under Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal intimidation, along with a Rs 5,000 fine. Failure to pay the fines will result in additional simple imprisonment.

In a separate case, Demonstar Kharbani was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 8 of the POCSO Act. He was also fined Rs 3,000, with additional simple imprisonment for non-payment.

Both cases were registered at Rynjah Police Station. The first case was investigated by Inspector Raymond Kurkalang, now posted at Mawngap Police Station, while Inspector Lily D Sangma from Sadar Police Station handled the second case.

The verdicts were delivered by Special Judge Swapna G Momin, highlighting the court’s commitment to ensuring justice for child victims and holding offenders accountable.
