Meghalaya: Umiam Lake Casts Anchor for National Sailing Spectacle
Shillong: The tranquil waters of Umiam Lake have transformed into a bustling arena, as the 3rd North East Regatta officially hoisted its sails today, marking a significant milestone for competitive sailing in the region. This six-day maritime extravaganza, set to conclude on May 29, has drawn an impressive fleet of 79 seasoned sailors from nine distinguished clubs across the nation, firmly cementing Meghalaya’s burgeoning reputation on India’s competitive sailing map.
The prestigious event is a collaborative effort, meticulously orchestrated by the Umiam Sailing Club in tandem with the Yachting Association of India, and generously supported by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya. Participants will navigate the currents in five distinct classes of boats: Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, 420, and 29er. Notably, the inclusion of technically challenging double-handed vessels like the 420 and 29er represents a substantial leap forward, elevating the technical prowess and standards of sailing in the Northeast.
This year’s regatta places a pronounced emphasis on fostering young talent and cultivating robust team dynamics, actively encouraging budding sailors and championing the vibrant water sports culture within the Northeastern states. Beyond the thrill of competition, the event seamlessly aligns with Meghalaya’s ambitious tourism objectives — envisioning Umiam Lake as a premier national hub for watersports and adventure tourism.
The races are slated to unfold at the picturesque Water Sports Complex, promising not only high-stakes competition but also breathtaking scenic vistas for spectators. Organisers are anticipating a lively turnout and express fervent hope that the regatta will ignite a wave of renewed interest in sailing across the entire region, inspiring future generations to take to the waters.
