Meghalaya Village Bans Sunday Tourism to Combat Plastic Pollution

Northeast Desk, 5th August: The council of Khlieh A Sem, a picturesque village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, has implemented a ban on tourist entry on Sundays in an effort to curb plastic pollution and promote cleanliness. Known for its stunning waterfalls, the village in the Mawkynrew area is committed to preserving its natural beauty.

The decision follows concerns from villagers who are occupied with church services on Sundays, leaving no one available to manage the waste brought in by tourists.

Village chief stated, “Tourists are welcome to visit Mawkynrew, and we are taking steps to ensure cleanliness and maintain infrastructure.” The village council has also appealed to the Meghalaya government for assistance in maintaining the village and promoting tourism.

In addition to the ban, Khlieh A Sem has established guidelines for tourists to follow, ensuring their visits do not negatively impact the environment. The move underscores the village’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable future.
