Meghalaya: Voice of People Party Leaves an All-Party Conference Over Roster System and Declares Hunger Strike

National Desk, 19 May: Representatives of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) staged a walk-out from the All Party Meeting on Friday claiming it was futile to discuss the roster system without addressing the job reservation policy. Additionally, the representatives argued that the roster system is not “rocket science” and is not difficult to understand; yet, the party members insisted that they attended the meeting because the subject of the invitation was “Roster Reservation.”

An indefinite hunger strike will also be held beginning on May 23 at the Secretariat’s gates, according to VPP Chief Ardent Basiawmaoit.

More details awaited.

Voice of the People Party (VPP) elected MLAs and their supporters staged a sit-in protest to demand that all recruiting procedures be suspended until the state reservation policy is reviewed on Wednesday.

VPP leader Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit gave the government 48 hours to halt job interviews on May 12. If they don’t, he warned to agitate.

A group of demonstrators holding protest signs gathered on Wednesday at a parking lot close to the Additional Secretariat in Shillong to call for the immediate delay of the hiring process.

Despite criticism from the opposing Voice of the People’s Party (VPP), the Meghalaya government opted on May 16 not to adopt the roster system and reservation policy right now.
