Meghalaya: West Khasi Hills Establishes District Level Protection Cell for Transgender Community
Northeast Desk, 10th September: The West Khasi Hills district has made a significant advancement in protecting the rights of transgender individuals by establishing a District Level Protection Cell. Deputy Commissioner Garod LSN Dykes, who also chairs the District Legal Protection Cell for Transgender, announced this development.
This initiative aligns with the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020, which aim to ensure legal protection and promote social inclusion for transgender individuals. The new cell is designed to address and safeguard the rights of the transgender community in the region.
Additionally, transgender individuals can now utilize the National Portal for Transgender to apply for official recognition. This online platform facilitates the registration process for Transgender Certificates, which are integral to accessing the SMILE scheme, a government initiative that supports the transgender community.
