Meghalaya Witnesses Robust Voter Turnout in First Phase of Lok Sabha Elections
Northeast Desk, 20th April: During the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha General Elections held nationwide on April 19, Meghalaya demonstrated a significant turnout of 76.60 percent, showcasing the state’s enthusiastic participation in the democratic process.
The turnout in Meghalaya’s two constituencies, Tura and Shillong, revealed a notable contrast. Tura displayed an impressive turnout of 81.37 percent, highlighting the fervent civic engagement and commitment to democratic participation among its residents. In comparison, Shillong exhibited a slightly lower but still commendable turnout of 73.78 percent.
Competing for the two Lok Sabha seats from Meghalaya, six candidates from Shillong and four from Tura engaged in a competitive race. Notable contenders included Congress MP Vincent H Pala, NPP’s Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, NPP’s Agatha Sangma, and TMC’s Zenith Sangma, reflecting the intensity of the electoral competition.
The polls, held in a single phase on April 19, witnessed active engagement from citizens across various assembly constituencies in the state. Polling authorities recognized and appreciated this engagement by presenting citizens with mementoes such as graphic coffee mugs, certificates, plants, and saplings. Special acknowledgment was given to senior voters, first-time voters, and early voters for their participation.
Overall, these polling figures underscore the significance of democratic rights within Meghalaya, showcasing the diverse electoral engagement of citizens across its constituencies. The results of the elections are scheduled to be declared on June 4, 2024.
