Meghalaya’s Garo Film ‘Chanchisoa’ to Shine at 55th International Film Festival of India

Shillong: In a historic moment for Meghalaya’s film industry, Chanchisoa, a Garo language film co-directed by Elvachisa Ch Sangma and Dipankar Das, has been selected to be showcased at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

This selection marks a milestone for Meghalaya’s cinema and is among only 20 non-feature films chosen from across India for this year’s prestigious event.

The IFFI 2024 also brings wider recognition to Northeast Indian cinema with selections including Karken, a Galo language film from Arunachal Pradesh directed by Nending Loder, along with three Assamese films—Juiphool, Rador Pakhi, and Swargarath.

These selections highlight the region’s diverse cultural storytelling and linguistic representation on a national stage.

This year’s festival jury, led by acclaimed filmmaker Dr. Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, carefully selected 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films from an impressive pool of 384 entries.

The feature segment will open with Randeep Hooda’s Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, while the Ladakhi film Ghar Jaisa Kuch will debut in the non-feature category.

The 2024 lineup spans 12 languages and features notable films such as Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail and the sci-fi 3D spectacle Kalki 2898 AD.

The festival, set for November 20-28 in Goa, is a collaboration between the National Film Development Corporation, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Government of Goa.

Since its inception in 1978, IFFI’s Indian Panorama section has served as a critical platform for promoting Indian cinema globally, facilitating cultural exchange through screenings at international festivals and cultural events.
