Meghalaya’s Garo Heritage Village Sees Massive Greening Drive
Wangala A’dam, Meghalaya: A significant environmental endeavour unfolded on Saturday in Wangala A’dam, the Garo Heritage Village, as over 500 trees were planted in a concerted effort to bolster the region’s green cover and safeguard its ecological future. The initiative was a collaborative undertaking, spearheaded by the A’chik A’song Environment Enthusiast Society, working in close conjunction with the District Social Forestry and the revered Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee. This large-scale planting drive is an integral part of a broader strategy aimed at preserving both the local ecosystem and the rich cultural heritage that defines the area.
Rikman Ronald Sangma, the esteemed Chairman of the Wangala Festival, underscored the paramount importance of such proactive environmental measures. He articulated, “Today, trees and plants are disappearing everywhere in the world, and we are also witnessing a shortage of water. We don’t know what challenges future generations will have to face. Perhaps they may even have to face more severe consequences.” His words resonated with a deep concern for the future, highlighting the urgent necessity for immediate environmental intervention.
The ambitious tree planting event is envisioned as a crucial step towards ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment for generations yet to come, directly addressing the pressing concerns of escalating deforestation and the looming spectre of water scarcity. This robust, community-driven effort is a testament to a burgeoning awareness of environmental responsibilities among the local populace and reflects a collective desire to uphold the inherent natural beauty and vital resources of the Garo Hills for the foreseeable future.
