Shillong, Meghalaya : In a major push towards modernising its agricultural landscape, Meghalaya on June 2 witnessed the fourth day of its ambitious Vikshit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, reaching a remarkable 7,278 farmers across 63 villages spread over 13 blocks. This comprehensive agricultural awareness campaign, spearheaded by the state’s Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), is a pivotal part of Meghalaya’s ongoing commitment to bolster rural incomes and equip its farming community with cutting-edge, sustainable practices.
The day’s intense focus was on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable farming techniques, directly addressing the unique topographical challenges and changing weather patterns prevalent in the northeastern state. Farmers actively participated in hands-on training sessions, gaining exposure to revolutionary agricultural technologies, including the precise application of nano fertilisers and the efficiency of drone applications for meticulous crop monitoring. The programme championed integrated farming systems, effectively blending Meghalaya’s rich traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific methodologies.
A significant segment of the training was dedicated to robust livestock management, a crucial component of Meghalaya’s rural economy. Veterinary experts provided invaluable guidance on essential vaccination schedules for pigs, poultry, goats, and cattle. Critical disease prevention measures, encompassing rabies awareness and effective foot-and-mouth disease management, were thoroughly discussed, underscoring their importance for the state’s substantial livestock sector.
As part of the initiative, participating farmers received climate-resilient rice seeds, specifically adapted for the impending Kharif season, along with a diverse range of vegetable and millet seeds. Furthermore, comprehensive extension materials were distributed, covering improved crop varieties, ingenious rainwater harvesting techniques, and the benefits of organic farming practices, empowering farmers with actionable knowledge.
Agricultural officers meticulously elucidated various government support schemes designed to benefit the farming community. These included the immensely popular PM-KISAN direct benefit transfer program, the accessible Kisan Credit Cards, and specialised insurance schemes tailored for both crops and livestock. Farmers also gained insights into the availability of subsidised machinery and the utility of custom hiring centres, making expensive equipment more accessible to small-scale producers.
Special emphasis was placed on the cultivation of high-value crops perfectly suited to Meghalaya’s unique climate, notably the premium Lakadong turmeric, renowned for commanding high prices in national markets. The training delved into cultivation techniques for crops that thrive in hilly regions but are challenging to grow in the plains, highlighting Meghalaya’s distinct agricultural advantages.
The programme also meticulously addressed crucial soil health management. Farmers witnessed practical demonstrations of soil testing procedures and learned how to accurately interpret soil health cards. Expert guidance was provided on optimal crop selection based on soil analysis results and integrated nutrient management techniques specifically adapted to Meghalaya’s diverse soil conditions.
Finally, extension workers passionately underscored the immense economic potential of value-added agricultural enterprises. These included lucrative ventures such as mushroom cultivation, profitable beekeeping, and the efficient processing of horticultural products. Information regarding agri-business incubation centres and the formation of farmer-producer organisations was diligently shared, aiming to ignite and nurture entrepreneurial spirit within the farming community.
