Meghalaya’s Harijan Colony Relocation Faces Delay Due to Military Guidelines

Shillong: The relocation of 342 families from Harijan Colony in Shillong’s Them Iew Mawlong has hit a roadblock due to military guidelines.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the proposal for defence land to relocate the families is facing delay due to strict military guidelines.

The Meghalaya government had earlier written to the Union Defence Ministry regarding the land near the petrol pump at Iewmawlong.

Although the proposal was not approved, the ministry responded with various rules and criteria for granting plots of defence land.

Sangma expressed concerns over the Army’s restrictions and strict provisions, which are hindering relocation efforts.

Despite the challenges, the state government remains committed to finding a solution.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who chairs the High-Level Committee on the Harijan Colony relocation issue, had earlier stated that the state has prepared a blueprint for the residents’ relocation, ensuring their needs are met. The government aims to come up with a solution soon.
