Meghalaya’s HSPDP Urges Resumption of Border Talks with Assam
Northeast, 15th August: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has called on the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to resume the second phase of border negotiations with Assam to address the unresolved areas of dispute between the two states.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, HSPDP President KP Pangniang highlighted the need to address the remaining six sectors of the interstate boundary issue. While acknowledging the MDA government’s efforts in settling six sectors of the long-standing dispute in 2022, Pangniang emphasized that the second phase remains pending.
The HSPDP expressed appreciation for the MDA government’s commitment to resolving the boundary dispute and urged an immediate resumption of talks. Pangniang indicated that CM Sangma has assured that discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will take place before the state Assembly’s upcoming autumn session.
Both states have established regional committees to facilitate these discussions, and necessary documentation will soon be submitted to Assam. Meghalaya Minister Paul Lyngdoh also reiterated the state’s strong claim over 54 villages in the Langpih sector, managed by the West Khasi Hills regional committee.
