Meghalaya’s Laitumkhrah Region to Relocate Over 89 Street Vendors for Pedestrian Safety
Guwahati, 24th January: In a bid to decongest the bustling Laitumkhrah region of Meghalaya and enhance pedestrian safety, more than 89 street vendors and hawkers are set to be relocated by mid-February. The decision was announced by Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh following a collaborative meeting involving the Laitumkhrah Dorbar Shnong and various government departments.
The relocation plan aligns with the National Vendors/Hawkers Policy guidelines and aims to establish a “hawker-free zone.” Lyngdoh emphasized that the initiative prioritizes public interest and upholds the right of way for pedestrians. The vendors’ committee is expected to cooperate with the process, and authorities express optimism that the relocation will proceed smoothly, thanks to adherence to the Hawkers Act.
Beyond vendor relocation, discussions are underway to potentially modify the Laitumkhrah link road towards Dhankheti and Beat House, with considerations for implementing one-way traffic. These measures aim to tackle traffic congestion, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming reopening of educational institutions. Collaborative efforts between the Dorbar Shnong and the executive committee will guide these decisions.
The relocation deadline is set between February 10-15, and Lyngdoh assured that authorities are well-prepared and ready to execute the plan, emphasizing its positive impact on public safety and convenience.
