Meghalaya’s NEHU Crisis Deepens: VC Extends Leave Amidst Protests

Shillong: The ongoing turmoil at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has taken a new turn with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla extending his leave for an additional 15 days, until December 13.

This decision comes amidst intense protests by students and faculty members who have been demanding the resignation of Shukla and other key officials. The protesters allege mismanagement, financial irregularities, and a lack of transparency in the university’s administration.

Prof. Nirmalemdu Saha, the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, confirmed the extension of Shukla’s leave. The move has further escalated tensions on campus, as the university remains under the shadow of uncertainty.

The Ministry of Education had earlier appointed a two-member committee to investigate the allegations against the VC and other officials. However, the report of this committee is yet to be released.

Shukla’s request for security from the Central government has further highlighted the gravity of the situation. The students’ union, NEHUSU, has vowed to prevent his entry into the campus, maintaining their stance on his removal.

The future of NEHU hangs in the balance as the crisis continues to unfold. The university community is anxiously awaiting a resolution to the ongoing turmoil and the restoration of normalcy on campus.
