Meghalaya’s NEIAH Trainees on Hunger Strike Over Stipend Delays

Shillong: Postgraduate trainees at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH) in Mawdiangdiang have entered the fourth day of a hunger strike, protesting the alleged non-payment of stipends for over a year.

The trainees have raised concerns over stipend disbursement delays, issues with affiliation, and guide allocation, accusing institute officials of failing to address their grievances.

The protesting trainees criticized the director, deputy director, and other officials for their lack of engagement, claiming they have shown no willingness to resolve the matter. With health risks increasing, medical assistance has been provided to the trainees, who remain steadfast in their demands.

Meanwhile, unrest continues at Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), where Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla has sought security from the Central government to ensure his return to the Shillong campus on December 2. Citing safety concerns, Shukla has also urged intervention to address the ongoing protests led by students and faculty, which have paralyzed university operations.

As tensions persist at both institutions, authorities face mounting pressure to resolve the grievances and restore normalcy.
