Meghalaya’s Power Minister Seeks Increased Federal Funding for Smart Meters and Renewable Energy Initiatives

Shillong— Power Minister AT Mondal of Meghalaya urged the central government for enhanced financial support to facilitate smart meter implementation and renewable energy projects during the National Power Ministers’ Conference at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre.

Mondal warned that existing subsidies for smart meters fall short of covering actual installation costs, which, if not addressed, could lead to added financial pressure on consumers or utility companies.

Mondal highlighted that the approved subsidy amounts are insufficient as discovered meter costs exceed current federal allocations, even though they align with figures seen in other northeastern states. “Without an increase in subsidies, either consumers or utility companies will bear the additional costs, which could hinder the rollout,” Mondal cautioned.

The minister also sought federal support for Meghalaya’s ambitious renewable energy plans, particularly for proposed pumped storage projects with a cumulative capacity of 4,800 MW. These projects, however, face challenges due to high tariffs, rendering them financially unviable without central support. Mondal advocated for power-sharing benefits from the central government to make these projects sustainable and affordable.

In addition, Mondal pushed for the restoration of central financial assistance for small hydropower projects. This support, which previously amounted to Rs 7.5 crore per MW, was crucial for advancing small hydro initiatives, some of which have completed detailed project reports and are awaiting funding to begin construction.

Addressing the northeastern states’ specific concerns, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary announced a follow-up meeting scheduled in Shillong on November 27-28.

The conference was attended by power ministers from across the nation, alongside leaders from major power corporations such as NTPC, NEEPCO, PGCIL, and SJVNL, and focused on key national power initiatives and measures to enhance consumer protections.
