Meghalaya’s Umiam Set for Major Tourism Revamp with Over 300 Acres Allocated for Development
Northeast Desk, 22nd June: Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that Umiam is poised for a significant renovation, supported by the forest department’s allocation of over 300 acres of land. This development was revealed following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on June 20.
Lyngdoh stated that the state government aims to transform Umiam into a premier tourist attraction in the Northeast region, highlighting the ‘substantial progress’ made with the forest department’s commitment to investing land for tourism development.
The minister mentioned that the relevant department will finalize the details, with a shared vision across the government to establish Umiam as a key tourist destination. Plans include the introduction of new accommodation facilities and entertainment zones, focusing on expanding units of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).
Additionally, Lyngdoh noted that the state government is identifying opportunities for water sports and other entertainment activities in the area to enhance Umiam’s appeal to tourists.
