Meiteis in Assam Opt Not to Celebrate Ningol Chakouba Amidst Manipur Unrest

Northeast Desk, 16th November: In a poignant display of solidarity, the Meitei community in Assam has opted to forgo the festivities of Ningol Chakouba, one of their most significant celebrations. The decision resonates with a collective expression of support for the victims affected by the recent ethnic violence in Manipur.

Ningol Chakouba, observed on the second lunar day in the Hiyangei month of the Manipur calendar, traditionally centers around strengthening the bonds of love between married women (Ningol) and their paternal families. During the festival, married women are traditionally invited to their parental homes for a festive feast (Chakouba). In a reversal of tradition, the Meitei community in Assam has chosen not to partake in the celebrations this year, reflecting a solemn acknowledgment of the hardships faced by their brethren in Manipur.

The festival typically involves male family members orchestrating the preparations, including organizing feasts and purchasing gifts for their female relatives. However, this year’s abstention from the festivities carries a more profound message, underscoring the community’s empathetic stance towards those affected by recent incidents, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility.
