Meluri Celebrates Landmark Inauguration as Nagaland’s 17th District

Kohima: A significant milestone was reached in Nagaland as Meluri was officially designated as the state’s 17th district.

The momentous event, held on February 21st, saw Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio formally launch the new district at a public gathering in Kohima, marking a pivotal moment for the region.

Previously serving as an Additional Deputy Commission headquarters within the Phek district, Meluri’s elevation to a full-fledged district was formalized on November 2, 2024.

The inauguration ceremony, a collaborative effort between the Pochury Hoho and the district administration, witnessed Chief Minister Rio as the honored guest.

The event drew a substantial crowd, including numerous ministers, legislators, tribal leaders, and thousands of Pochury residents. The proceedings were highlighted by the unveiling of a foundation monolith and the dedication of a new multi-purpose sports complex.

In his address, Chief Minister Rio extended his congratulations to the Pochury community, emphasizing that the district’s formation signals the dawn of a new era characterized by growth, development, and progress. He also acknowledged the foresight of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), whose support and “No Objection Certificate” were crucial in facilitating Meluri’s establishment. Rio called for continued unity and brotherhood between the tribes, reinforcing the importance of harmony within the larger Naga community.

Highlighting Meluri’s potential, Rio pointed to its expansive 1,011 square kilometers, encompassing 34 villages, and its wealth of biodiversity, natural resources, and cultural heritage. He mentioned notable landmarks such as Shilloi Lake, the Tizu River, and the International Trade Centre at Avakhung. While pledging government support for Meluri’s development, he stressed the necessity of active community involvement for sustainable progress.

Recognizing Meluri’s strategic location near Myanmar, Rio outlined plans for infrastructure projects aimed at improving trade and connectivity through inland waterways. He concluded his address by urging the community to embrace hard work, unity, and a strong community spirit to ensure lasting peace, prosperity, and development for the newly formed district.
