MHA Urges Respectful Disposal of Paper Flags Used During National Events
New Delhi, January 19, 2024 – In preparation for the upcoming Republic Day on January 26, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a circular to all states and union territories, urging them to ensure that paper Indian national flags used by the public during significant national, cultural, and sports events are not discarded or thrown on the ground after the event.
The MHA emphasized that the Indian national flag symbolizes the hopes and aspirations of the country’s people, and the paper tricolours should be disposed of privately, in line with the dignity of the flag.
“As per clause (x) of Paragraph 2.2 of Part-II of the Flag Code of India, the National Flag made of paper may be waved by the public on occasions important to national, cultural, and sports events. You are requested to ensure that flags used by the public, made of paper, are not discarded or thrown on the ground after the event. Such flags are to be disposed of in private, consistent with the dignity of the flag,” stated the letter issued by the ministry to all states and union territories.
India will observe its 75th Republic Day on January 26, with French President Emmanuel Macron set to be the chief guest at the parade in Delhi.
