M’halaya CM Conrad: Sangma brothers will stand for its people not Kolkata or New Delhi
Guwahati: Conrad Sangma, the leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), wrapped up his election campaign for the 11th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on February 25 at Tura.
Speaking at a Tura Bazar election gathering, he advised Tura Town residents to exercise careful consideration when casting their ballots because the results will be felt for five years. As he helped them understand the importance of their vote, he urged, “Cast your vote after careful consideration and deliberation.”
“During the election, you must remember not to cast your vote by listening to others or following others. You must not forget that the button you press, the effect of it is not limited to that second, or that day but you are pressing that button for 5 years. Once you have pressed that button, it will not change; you’ll need to suffer for 5 years,” he reminded them.
He added that the completion of his election campaign at Tura Bazar was both usual and noteworthy because his father, (L) P.A. Sangma, a former Lok Sabha Speaker, had previously ended his campaigns there.
Remembering his late father’s teachings, he recalled that PA Sangma had instructed them to follow a path that would see them working for the good of the people and the community while embracing everyone without prejudice.
“He taught us to work for the people and the society, and today we are walking on the same path taught to us. He would conclude his election campaign right here, at this very spot; hold his last meeting and give his last speech before the conclusion of the election campaign,” Conrad recalled.
He added that PA Sangma was a remarkable leader since he was committed to helping the entire state of Meghalaya as well as the country, in addition to the Garo Hills.
“He always said we need to walk forward by taking people from all walks of life together, do not discriminate,” the NPP chief said and informed the gathering that NPP, a party born in Meghalaya and based on the ideals and teachings of PA Sangma, is now a national party, achieving this status within 10 years of its founding.
Conrad Sangma urged the electorate to exercise their right to vote responsibly by reminding them that while leaders from Kolkata and New Delhi may run for office during the elections, Conrad Sangma will always be there for them when they are in need.
“I don’t want to take names but you all know that whoever has come in this election, you’ll probably see them again only in the 2028 elections. Leaders will come for election campaigns. But the people of Tura should remember that if they any face issue or problem, in a time of your need, nobody will come from Kolkata or New Delhi. If there is anyone who comes to you at that time, it will be only Thomas Sangma or Conrad Sangma who will remain with you,” he asserted.
Conrad claimed that he and Thomas Sangma had accelerated Tura Town’s development and that they wished to keep working to move Tura in this way. He pleaded with the residents of North and South Tura to repose their faith in Thomas Sangma and himself in order to continue collaborating for Tura and the Garo Hills, respectively.
Conrad ran a campaign for party candidate Sanjay Sangma in Mahendraganj Constituency earlier in the day and professed optimism that the NPP will win an absolute majority in the assembly vote on February 27.
