Militant Crackdown Intensifies in Manipur with Three Arrests

IMPHAL: Security forces in Manipur have stepped up their campaign against militant outfits, apprehending three active cadres of banned groups in a series of targeted actions over the past two days. The arrests, made in separate operations, underscore the sustained efforts by authorities to restore peace and order in the state.

On August 9, a team from the security forces successfully arrested Wahengbam Kiran Singh, 25, an active member of the proscribed PREPAK (PRO). Also known as Amuthoi, he was picked up from his residence in Kumbi Thingel Leikai, Bishnupur district. Kiran is accused of being involved in extortion activities and issuing threats to local businessmen and the public. A mobile phone was seized from his possession.

The day prior, on August 8, Manipur Police nabbed Oinam Soniya Devi, 31, an active cadre of the KCP (Taibangnganba) outfit. Alias Tete, she was apprehended from Chingmeirong Maning Leikai in Imphal West district. Originally from Thanga Oinam Leikai in Bishnupur, a mobile phone and an Aadhaar card were recovered from her.

On the same day, security forces also arrested Kshetrimayum Naoba Singh, 28, of Haobam Marak Irom Leikai in Imphal West. As an active member of KCP (MFL), Naoba is alleged to have shared contact details of valley-based doctors with fellow cadres for the purpose of extortion. A mobile handset and an Aadhaar card were seized during his arrest.

In a parallel move to ensure law and order, Manipur Police continued its rigorous crackdown on motor vehicle offences. A total of 51 challans were issued on August 8, amassing fines worth Rs 88,500. Additionally, the police removed tinted films from 12 vehicles the previous day as part of their drive.

The security forces have also been conducting extensive search and area domination operations in fringe and vulnerable areas across various districts. These operations are aimed at maintaining a visible presence and preventing any untoward incidents. The authorities also ensured the safe passage of 116 vehicles carrying essential commodities along National Highway-37, providing security convoys in sensitive stretches to guarantee uninterrupted movement. A total of 111 checkpoints were established across hill and valley districts, with officials affirming that such operations will be continued to ensure stability and peace in Manipur.
