Minister Gabriel D Wangsu Initiates Fisheries Development Strategy in Arunachal Pradesh

Northeast Desk, 21st June: On June 20, Minister of Horticulture & Agriculture Gabriel D Wangsu spearheaded a crucial inaugural meeting with the Department of Fisheries at the Civil Secretariat, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing fisheries development in the state.

Accompanied by key officials including Saugat Biswas, IAS, Commissioner (Fisheries), and Joyshil Taba, Director of Fisheries, Minister Wangsu underscored the imperative of engaging the youth in fish farming and entrepreneurship. He directed the formulation of a comprehensive framework for “Skilling Young Fish Farmers for Self Employment,” slated for presentation in the upcoming Budget Session.

Highlighting the department’s “100 Days Action Plan,” Minister Wangsu stressed the necessity of crafting an “Aqua Policy” tailored to Arunachal Pradesh’s unique topography and physiography. Central to these efforts is the refurbishment of the Fish Farmers Training Centre in Emchi, designated as a pivotal hub for training initiatives. The Minister also emphasized revitalizing the “Atma Nirbhar Matsya Palan Yojana” with dynamic policy interventions to streamline implementation.

Commissioner Saugat Biswas, IAS, advocated for partnerships with renowned research institutes and the Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. He proposed exploring opportunities in ornamental fishery, indigenous fish conservation, and food processing to ensure sustainable sectoral growth.

Minister Wangsu reaffirmed the vast potential of the fisheries sector in alleviating poverty and unemployment across Arunachal Pradesh through targeted policy interventions.

Following the fisheries meeting, Minister Wangsu engaged with officials from Food & Civil Supply, Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, discussing the effective implementation of the National Food Security Mission (NFSM). Subsequent discussions with Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary (AHV) officials centered on the newly introduced “New Policy on Agriculture and Horticulture,” focusing on enhancing agricultural strategies as per the state Cabinet’s recent directives.

The comprehensive sessions reflect Minister Wangsu’s commitment to bolstering agriculture, fisheries, and allied sectors, laying the groundwork for sustainable development and economic empowerment across Arunachal Pradesh.
