Minor Husband Detained in Gangtok Following Alleged Assault on Pregnant Teen Wife

Gangtok, Sikkim – A wave of concern has swept through Gangtok following the detention of a juvenile male accused of assaulting his 17-year-old wife, who is currently 36 weeks pregnant. The unsettling details of the case emerged after the young victim sought prenatal care, triggering a police investigation into the alleged abuse.

The Sadar Police Station officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) on April 24th, invoking Sections 5 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. This legal action was prompted by revelations made during the victim’s visit to the Uttarey Health & Wellness Sub Center.

Crucially, her school certification verified her date of birth as January 2, 2008, unequivocally establishing her status as a minor. During her visit, she disclosed instances of sexual intercourse with her husband occurring in August 2024 at their shared rented residence situated in the Sukha Pool area of Upper Sichey, Gangtok. Medical assessments have dated her pregnancy from approximately August 15, 2024.

The initial report, a Zero FIR, was lodged at the Dentam Police Station before being transferred to the Sadar Police Station, which holds the appropriate jurisdictional authority over the case. Subsequently, law enforcement officials have taken the accused into custody under Sections 35 and 317 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

Presently, the police are actively pursuing a comprehensive investigation into the matter, with a primary focus on ensuring the well-being and safety of the young victim. Authorities have confirmed that she is currently receiving necessary medical attention and crucial counseling support during this challenging time.
