Guwahati: India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham has been won by weightlifter Mirabai Chanu.

For the 49-kilogram clean and jerk, Chanu took home the gold. She lifted 210 kilos in total, earning India’s third medal of the day and the first gold.

Celebrations began in Mirabai Chanu’s hometown after she won a gold medal for India in weightlifting on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

Family members and neighbours are seen celebrating the weightlifter’s joyful achievement at Nongpok Kakching in Manipur.

Tombi Devi, the mother of the gold medalist, expressed the anxiety she had the night before the competition.

“Since yesterday, I have prayed for her, but I haven’t been able to fall asleep,” she stated. She was sick, so I was worried about whether she would win or not. I had a lot of things running through my head and was feeling quite concerned for her up to this point. Her victory has put me at ease.

Earlier, wightlifter Gururaja Poojary won India’s second medal at the current CWG competition. He lifted a total of 269 kilos and took third place in the men’s 61 kilogramme division.

Sanket Sargar won the men’s 55 kilos silver medal prior to the match, starting India’s medal count at CWG 22. Before missing a weight of 139 kilogrammes in his second and third clean and jerk efforts in the final, he had lifted 135 kilos in his first attempt.
