Mizoram: Aizawl Gears Up for Inaugural International Half Marathon
Aizawl: A significant announcement has been made by Mizoram’s Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, revealing that Aizawl will host its first-ever International Half Marathon on April 26th. This landmark event is a collaborative effort between the Mizoram government and Innovations India.
The primary objectives of this international sporting affair extend beyond athletic competition. Organizers aim to champion health and fitness, invigorate tourism in the region, and spearhead a crucial anti-drug campaign targeting the youth.
Minister Hmar further elaborated on the broader vision behind the marathon, emphasizing its role in the empowerment of sportspersons and the overall development of Mizoram and Northeast India. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on the progress of the northeastern states.
The upcoming half marathon has garnered accreditation from the esteemed Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and has secured vital support from a diverse range of institutions and agencies. These include the Sports Authority of India (SAI), NF Railway, the Mizoram Athletic Association, various government departments, public sector units, and corporate entities.
Anticipation for the event is high, with expectations of over a thousand participants hailing from various corners of India and international locations. Notably, runners from Kenya and Vietnam have already confirmed their participation, adding an international flavor to the inaugural race.
The enthusiasm extends across India, with registrations pouring in from cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Indore, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Alwar, Haridwar, Shillong, Dimapur, Lakhimpur, Mirzapur, and Itanagar. Participation from Railways and Services personnel is also expected.
The Aizawl International Half Marathon will feature four distinct categories catering to different levels and interests: the 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km open race specifically for women, a 5 km fun race, and a 5 km race designed for junior participants.
Looking ahead, Minister Hmar envisions the Aizawl International Half Marathon (AIHM) becoming an annual fixture on the sporting calendar. He believes this event will play a crucial role in nurturing and empowering the youth and sportspersons of the region, providing them with opportunities to excel at national and international levels and bring pride to the nation.
The minister concluded by highlighting the marathon’s potential to serve as a major catalyst for development and to generate widespread positive attention for Mizoram on a global scale. A total prize purse of Rs 10 lakh will be awarded to the winners across the different categories.
