Mizoram: Aizawl Simulates Air Raid in Nationwide Civil Defence Drill
Aizawl: A full-scale civil defence mock drill unfolded across Aizawl today, May 7th, as the city participated in a nationwide exercise orchestrated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The drill, designed to evaluate the city’s readiness to respond to an aerial attack, centered on the area between Civil Hospital Aizawl and the All India Radio (AIR) Station.
The exercise commenced promptly at 11:00 am with the piercing sound of a warning siren emanating from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. This was followed by a simulated air raid targeting the AIR Station located in Tuikhuahtlang, setting the stage for the emergency response protocols to be activated.
A central Control Room, established within the Superintendent of Police’s office, became the hub for coordinating the intricate evacuation and rescue operations. From this nerve center, authorities monitored and directed the various responding agencies as they navigated the simulated crisis.
Swiftly mobilizing, rescue teams comprising personnel from the Mizoram Home Guards and Civil Defence, alongside members of the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Mizoram Armed Police, executed rapid response operations. Their efforts focused on evacuating individuals role-playing as survivors from the affected area. Simultaneously, ambulances and fire service units raced to the scene, while traffic police and NCC cadets diligently worked to ensure the unimpeded passage of emergency vehicles.
The simulated scenario presented rescue teams with the challenge of handling eight casualties, tragically including three fatalities. Demonstrating their emergency medical capabilities, responders ‘transported’ two injured individuals via ambulance to Civil Hospital for necessary treatment.
Complementing the practical drill, a parallel initiative focused on raising awareness among the younger population. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted disaster preparedness sessions in 15 high schools throughout Aizawl, equipping students with crucial knowledge and skills.
The city will experience a further phase of the mock drill later today, with a second warning siren scheduled for 6:30 pm. Following this, Aizawl will observe a five-minute blackout as the simulation continues to assess the city’s comprehensive emergency response capabilities.
