Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023: State records over 80% voter turnout

Northeast Desk, 8th November: Mizoram conducted a peaceful and incident-free election on Tuesday, November 7, for all 40 seats of its legislative Assembly. The morning witnessed an impressive voter turnout, with 49.2% of registered voters casting their ballots by 11 am. By 4 pm, this number had surged to 76.53%, indicating strong participation from the electorate.

As of 9.05 pm, the final turnout figure remained pending, as six polling stations were yet to close. Notably, Chief Minister Zoramthanga encountered a minor setback when attempting to vote in the morning due to a malfunctioning EVM. However, he later returned to the polling booth and successfully exercised his right to vote.

In a surprising turn of events, Lalduhoma, the primary challenger from the Zoram People’s Movement, did not vote on Tuesday. He spent the day in his constituency of Serchhip, located approximately 90 km away from Aizawl, where he is registered to vote. The election results will reveal the impact of this decision in the days to come.
