Mizoram Assures Continued Support for Myanmar Refugees and Manipur IDPs: CM Lalduhoma

Northeast Desk, 7th January: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Delhi, affirmed that the state would persist in providing assistance to refugees from Myanmar and internally displaced people from Manipur, with support from the Centre.

While the Centre cannot grant refugee status to Myanmar nationals, it is willing to collaborate in providing relief. Over 31,000 members of the Chin community from Myanmar sought refuge in Mizoram since the military coup in February 2021. Additionally, more than 9,000 people from Manipur, displaced due to ethnic violence, have found shelter in Mizoram.

Lalduhoma’s administration, supported by the central government, is committed to continuing this assistance. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that Myanmar nationals in Mizoram won’t be deported until normalcy returns. Lalduhoma hopes the Centre will reconsider plans to fence a 300-km stretch of the India-Myanmar border, maintaining the current free movement regime.

This decision by the Mizoram government reflects not just political considerations but a humanitarian commitment to providing shelter and aid based on available resources, upholding human dignity for those displaced by conflict and political upheaval.
