Mizoram Authorities Close All Schools in Aizawl Amid Severe Flooding and Landslides

Northeast Desk, 22nd August: In response to the heavy rainfall that has battered Mizoram’s Aizawl district, leading to extensive flooding, mudslides, landslides, and rockfalls, local authorities have taken decisive action by suspending all school activities in the district. The move, aimed at safeguarding students and staff, was made after thorough consultations and analysis of meteorological data from the Indian Meteorological Department.

The Competent Authority has declared Thursday, August 22, 2024, an official holiday for all schools within Aizawl district. This precautionary measure is authorized under Section 30(v) in conjunction with Section 2(d) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, as detailed in Circular No.F.20016/12/2024-DMR dated July 30, 2024.

Authorities have also issued a stern warning, stating that any non-compliance with this directive will result in punitive action under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. This swift response underscores the district’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents amid the ongoing natural calamity.
