Mizoram: Belgian Photojournalist Detained at Aizawl Airport Amidst Cartridge Discovery
Aizawl: A routine security screening at Lengpui Airport, the gateway to Aizawl, culminated in the arrest of a Belgian national, Simon Clement, on suspicion of possessing illegal ammunition.
Authorities discovered two spent cartridge casings during a standard luggage inspection, triggering an immediate investigation. Clement, who identifies himself as a freelance photojournalist, was taken into custody on Wednesday.
The Mizoram Police have formally charged Clement under the Arms Act, initiating legal proceedings against him. The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the cartridges remain under scrutiny, with investigators working to ascertain their origin and Clement’s intentions. The arrest has raised questions regarding security protocols at the airport and the movement of foreign nationals within the region.
Further complicating the matter, it has emerged that Clement allegedly breached visa regulations by crossing the border into Myanmar. This unauthorized entry has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation. The individual’s travel history and activities in the neighboring country are now a focal point for law enforcement, as they strive to understand the full scope of his actions.
On Sunday, a court ordered Clement to judicial remand, resulting in his transfer to Tanhril jail, located on the western periphery of Aizawl. He will remain in custody while the investigation progresses. The remand allows authorities to conduct further inquiries and gather evidence related to the case.
The Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) has announced its intention to extend support to Clement. MJA president C. Lalrambuatsaiha confirmed that representatives from the association will visit Clement in jail on Monday. The organization’s move signals a developing interest in the case from local media circles, highlighting the involvement of a journalist in the unfolding events.
