Mizoram Bolsters Green Economy with Inauguration of Major Bamboo Processing Hub

Aizawl: In a significant stride towards sustainable industrialization, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma yesterday unveiled a state-of-the-art bamboo processing complex at the Sairang Horticulture Centre. The project, realized under the National Bamboo Mission, represents a substantial investment of ₹252.826 lakh aimed at harnessing the region’s abundant bamboo resources.

The newly commissioned infrastructure includes a sophisticated Bamboo Treatment & Seasoning Plant designed to enhance the longevity of bamboo products, a crucial Bamboo Depot & Godown for efficient storage and supply chain management, and a high-capacity Activated Charcoal Unit. This charcoal facility is projected to produce up to three tonnes of charcoal daily, translating to an annual output of approximately 900 tonnes. Furthermore, the unit will yield around 100 litres of vinegar each day, with the potential to refine up to 54 litres post-distillation.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, Chief Minister Lalduhoma underscored the pivotal role of bamboo in Mizoram’s economic future. He highlighted the rapid renewability of bamboo, contrasting its 1–2 year regeneration cycle with the decades required for conventional timber. “Bamboo holds the key to unlocking significant economic growth for Mizoram while simultaneously safeguarding our precious forest cover,” the Chief Minister asserted.

Elaborating on the technical aspects, C.H. Lalmuanpuia, Director of Horticulture and Mission Director of the State Bamboo Mission, explained that the treatment plant would extend the lifespan of processed bamboo to an impressive 50 years. The establishment of bamboo clusters in Chhingchhip, Baktawng, and Saiphal villages will ensure a consistent supply of raw materials to the processing units. The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) is providing crucial technical support and will conduct training programs to develop the necessary skills for plant operation and workforce capacity building.

Minister C. Lalsawivunga echoed the Chief Minister’s optimism, proclaiming the development as the beginning of a transformative era for Mizoram’s bamboo-based industries. He emphasized the importance of responsible resource management to guarantee the long-term success and sustainability of these new facilities.

Concluding the ceremony, Chief Minister Lalduhoma urged the plant workers to uphold the highest operational standards, envisioning the units as catalysts for a profound and sustainable economic transformation across the state.
