Mizoram Calamities Claim 42 Lives, 5,938 Structures Destroyed
Northeast Desk, 6th August: At least 42 people have died as a result of natural disasters in Mizoram between March and May 2024, according to officials. The state’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a meeting of the Mizoram State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Monday, where it was reported that 5,938 houses and buildings were destroyed during this period.
Among the deceased, 34 were killed in landslides that severely damaged homes in seven areas of Aizawl, the state capital, on May 28. The severity of the damage has prompted an inter-ministerial central team to review the situation, with expectations for the Centre to provide financial aid following their report on Cyclone Remal’s impact.
K Sapdanga, Minister of State for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, disclosed that the Mizoram government has requested Rs 237 crore from the Centre for rehabilitation and infrastructure repair.
In response to the immediate needs of those affected, temporary shelters have been set up in the Hlimen area for 41 families displaced from Hlimen and Melthum localities.
