Mizoram Chief Minister Cites Debt Burden as Hurdle to Policy Implementation

Northeast Desk, 17th July: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma acknowledged that the implementation of new policies has been hampered by a significant debt burden inherited from the previous administration, according to an official statement.

Speaking at the Mizoram State Policy Coordination Committee meeting, Lalduhoma noted that the government’s flagship programme, the Handholding policy, would face delays due to the need to repay public debt. He emphasized that large-scale projects would only be undertaken based on the state’s financial health.

Despite these financial constraints, the state government remains committed to supporting farmers by purchasing four key crops: ginger, chilli, turmeric, and broomsticks. This measure aims to provide some relief to the agricultural sector amidst fiscal challenges.

Earlier, state Animal Husbandry Minister Lalsawivunga disclosed that the previous MNF government had left liabilities amounting to over Rs 13,500 crore, nearly 95.6 percent of the state’s annual budget of Rs 14,209.94 crore for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
