Mizoram: Chin National Front Issues Apology Over Abduction of Mizo Teenagers by Militants

Northeast Desk, 13th September: The Chin National Front (CNF) has extended an official apology to the Village Council President (VCP) of Zokhawthar town in Mizoram’s Champhai district following the abduction and mistreatment of two teenage boys by militants from the Chin Defence Force (CDF) Hualngoram faction. The abduction, which occurred earlier this month, sparked public outrage and strained relations between the local community and the CNF.

In a letter addressed to the Zokhawthar VCP, CNF Vice Chairman Dr. Sui Khar expressed regret for the actions of the militants. “We deeply regret the recent incident involving the apprehension and mistreatment of two local individuals by members of CDF Hualngoram. The blame lies entirely with them,” the letter read. Dr. Khar emphasized the CNF’s sorrow over the delay in releasing the boys, who were held captive for six days, and assured the community that corrective measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence of such behavior.

The incident began on September 1, 2024, when five boys from Zokhawthar visited Rih Dil Lake. The group was stopped by CDF Hualngoram militants due to a previous dispute. While three boys managed to escape, two were taken hostage and subjected to harsh treatment, including torture, for several days. They were eventually released on September 6, 2024, following pressure from the Assam Rifles and the Chin National Army.

Public anger has mounted in the aftermath, with residents reminding the Chin forces of the hospitality extended to their people by Mizoram. The CNF’s letter concluded with a plea for forgiveness and a commitment to rebuilding trust between the communities.
