Mizoram Chugs into National Rail Network with Bairabi-Sairang Line Opening
Aizawl: In a landmark achievement for connectivity in the Northeast, Mizoram was on Monday, June 10, declared “fully integrated” into India’s national railway network. The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) formally commissioned and authorised the 51.38-km broad gauge Bairabi-Sairang railway line, following a thorough inspection that affirmed its technical safety. This development paves the way for direct rail connectivity to Aizawl, a long-cherished dream for the people of Mizoram.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway, confirmed the commissioning, stating that while the line is now technically safe, train operations await a formal nod from the Centre. The official inauguration is anticipated shortly. He highlighted the rigorous inspection process, with Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northeast Frontier Circle) Sumeet Singhal personally overseeing the final 33.86-km stretch from Hortoki to Sairang between June 6 and June 10. This particular section, traversing challenging hilly terrain, is a marvel of engineering, incorporating 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges.
The completion of this final leg marks a significant milestone, providing Mizoram with direct rail access for the first time. This transformative project is poised to usher in a new era of development for the state, promising to substantially boost both passenger and freight movement. Beyond the immediate logistical benefits, this integration is expected to act as a powerful catalyst for socio-economic growth, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the Mizo populace.
