Mizoram CM Calls Emergency Meet as Landslides Wreak Havoc

Aizawl: Mizoram is currently grappling with widespread disruption and devastation as incessant heavy rains continue to lash the state, triggering widespread waterlogging and numerous landslides. Chief Minister Lalduhoma convened an urgent meeting with cabinet ministers and key officials on June 1 to assess the grim situation and formulate immediate relief strategies.

Officials from the state disaster management and rehabilitation department reported a staggering 13 landslides across the state on Saturday alone, severely obstructing national highways and leaving several travellers stranded, particularly in areas like Thenzawl, Serchhip, and Sialsuk. The relentless downpour has led to the collapse of at least six houses – four in Aizawl and two in Serchhip – adding to the growing number of damaged residences. So far, 60 houses have either caved in or suffered significant damage, with another 69 vacated as a precautionary measure due to persistent landslide and flood threats.

The extent of the damage appears to be escalating, with a total of 211 landslide incidents reported across the state until Sunday, rendering 83 highway stretches impassable. The state’s infrastructure has taken a severe beating, with the power department confirming damage to at least seven 33 KV sub-stations, resulting in power outages affecting over a third of Mizoram. The public health engineering department also reported disruptions to water supply in approximately 50 locations, compounding the woes of residents.

During the emergency meeting, a significant observation was made regarding the man-made origins of many of the recent calamities. Consequently, the government has decided to implement stringent measures against unscientific construction practices, site development, and slope modification. Emphasising the need for swift action, Chief Minister Lalduhuma authorised the immediate release of funds to district disaster management authorities to expedite relief and restoration efforts. Detailed reports on the calamities and the challenges faced by the state government are expected to be submitted promptly.

Tragically, the current monsoon season has already claimed five lives due to rain-induced disasters. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported substantial rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Serchhip recording 10.46 cm, followed by Kolasib with 9.83 cm and Aizawl with 9.74 cm. The IMD has further warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state on Monday, indicating that the ordeal for Mizoram is far from over.
