Mizoram CM Chairs SDMA Meeting to Discuss Seismic Observatories and Disaster Management

Northeast Desk, 5th August: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on August 5 led a meeting of the Mizoram State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to address the installation of seismic observatories and other disaster management measures.

The meeting reviewed the financial report of the SDMA and discussed the installation of seismic observatories at six locations across Mizoram, as recommended by the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department. This initiative aims to enhance the state’s ability to monitor and respond to seismic activity.

From March to May 2024, Mizoram recorded 5,938 instances of damage from natural disasters, resulting in 42 fatalities. The meeting noted that 41 families displaced by landslides in Hlimen and Melthum on May 28 are currently residing in a relief camp.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma indicated that the reports from the Inter-Ministerial Central Team have been submitted to the Finance Ministry, with expectations for compensation to follow soon.

In addition to seismic observatories, the meeting addressed plans to acquire rescue and observational equipment and to form a study team to evaluate water drainage and garbage systems to mitigate landslides. The Chief Minister also highlighted the need for compensation for farmers who lost significant numbers of pigs due to African Swine Fever.

The meeting was attended by various ministers, including DM&R Minister K. Sapdanga, PWD Minister Vanlalhlana, Health Minister Lalrinpuii, AH & Vety Minister Lalsawivunga, PHE Minister Prof. Lalnilawma, FCS & CA Minister B. Lalchhanzova, Chief Secretary Dr. Renu Sharma, and Secretary of DM&R K. Lalrinzuali.
