Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Affirms Continued Support for Sheltering Refugees

Northeast Desk, 15th December: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has assured that his government will persist in providing support to the more than 40,000 refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur who have sought shelter in the state. In a statement to the assembly, Lalduhoma mentioned discussing the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, expressing his commitment to meet them in Delhi to seek the Centre’s assistance.

While Lalduhoma acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue and emphasized the importance of considering the Centre’s stance, he underscored the humanitarian nature of the matter, stating, “It is not a political but a humanitarian issue. We will continue to look after and provide shelter to the refugees and internally displaced people based on the availability of our resources.”

The Mizoram government has been hosting over 31,300 Myanmar nationals, primarily from the Chin community, who fled following a military coup in February 2021. Additionally, more than 1,100 Bangladeshis and nearly 12,000 people from Manipur, displaced due to ethnic clashes, have sought refuge in Mizoram. The state government’s commitment to supporting these displaced individuals remains steadfast, contingent on available resources.
