Mizoram CM Launches Book on Assam Rifles Campus’s Ecological Significance
Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma today launched a significant book titled “Tree Inventory and Carbon Storage of Assam Rifle Campus, Aizawl, Mizoram,” a collaborative effort by the Center for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ).
During the launch event, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of sustainable development in today’s world. He urged individuals and organizations alike to embrace this path and contribute to environmental conservation.
Highlighting the ongoing relocation of the Assam Rifles from Aizawl, Lalduhoma assured that a joint survey of the land is being conducted. Once vacated, the land will be strictly protected to preserve its ecological value.
The book, a result of meticulous research by PC Zothanpuii and Michael Lalramdingliana, research scholars from the Department of Forestry, Mizoram University, and edited by Dr. Vanramliana, provides valuable insights into the biodiversity of the Assam Rifles campus.
The study surveyed 480 plant species across 16.9 hectares, identifying 80 tree species belonging to 31 families and 59 genera. Notably, four species are critically endangered, one is endangered, and five are vulnerable, according to the IUCN Red List. Additionally, 71 of the plant species possess medicinal and edible properties. The campus is estimated to absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide, totaling 5766.73 metric tons of CO2e.
The Assam Rifles compound, often referred to as the “Lungs of Aizawl City,” has been the subject of a preservation drive initiated by the Bethlehem Branch of YMA since 2008. The launch of this book further underscores the ecological importance of this green oasis within the city.
