Mizoram CM Urges Youth to Seek Overseas Employment Amid Economic Challenges

Northeast Desk, 12th June: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has encouraged the state’s youth to prepare for employment opportunities abroad, citing the country’s struggling economy as a key factor behind high unemployment rates. Speaking at the inauguration of Zofa Agency, a private placement agency approved by the Union Ministry of External Affairs, Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of skill development and being open to low-paying jobs overseas.

“Our government is actively exploring opportunities for Mizo youth in Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and southern India,” the chief minister stated.

To address unemployment and facilitate job placements outside the state, the Mizoram Private Placement Agencies (Regulation) Act was enacted in 2015. Under this legislation, 27 private placement agencies were granted licenses to send job-seekers to positions outside Mizoram. However, these licenses were revoked this year after agencies were found to be operating beyond the Act’s provisions, sending youths to foreign countries illicitly.

Lalduhoma revealed that 29 individuals have been arrested for illegally sending unemployed youths abroad. Police have successfully rescued over 30 Mizo youths from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, and efforts are underway to bring back three Mizo women stranded in Syria.

The chief minister’s remarks highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to provide employment opportunities for the state’s youth amid challenging economic conditions.
