Mizoram CM Zoramthanga: State facing a fiscal shortage due to COVID-19

Guwahati: Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Friday stated that the state’s ability to survive in the face of financial difficulties depends on the effective mobilisation of resources.

He was delivering a general address to the Mizoram Civil Service Association (MCSA) at the Aijal Club in Aizawl.

CM Zoramthanga said that the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors have contributed to the state’s financial difficulties.

He claimed that the pandemic prevented the state from receiving its share of more than 3,000 crore rupees from the Centre.

“Due to the pandemic, we did not receive funds amounting to over Rs. 3,000 crore from the Centre, which we should receive. However, amid the pandemic and financial crisis, we are fortunate to proceed towards what we are today,” Zoramthanga said.

“We have to effectively utilise and mobilise our resources to sustain ourselves,” he said.

The chief minister also urged government workers to perform their jobs honestly and faithfully.

He advised government workers to put in hard work and be sincere in their desire to see their state grow.

According to him, “good governance and a well-functioning administrative system are crucial preconditions for progress.”

He asserted that a shift in mindset is necessary to fully utilise the state’s natural advantages, including its huge forest expanses, favourable climate, and ample rainfall, among others, for economic development.

The chief minister emphasised the need of resource mobilisation and stated that state civil service personnel play a significant role as counsellors in making recommendations to the government.

The newly constructed Saitual, Khawzawl, and Hnahthial districts were upgraded, and a separate All India Service cadre was established for Mizoram, among other resolutions that were adopted by the MCSA meeting.
