Mizoram Congress President Lalsawta to Resign Amidst Party’s Election Setback

Northeast Desk, 4th December: In the aftermath of the Mizoram state elections, Mizoram Congress president Lalsawta is poised to resign from his post, prompted by the party’s disappointing performance.

Sources indicate that Lalsawta’s decision follows the Congress party leading in only one seat out of the 40 in the assembly elections. The situation is particularly embarrassing for Mizoram Congress, as it secures victory in just one seat, while the BJP claims two seats, marking the party’s lowest score in the state assembly this time.

Adding to the setback, Lalsawta himself faced defeat in the Aizawl West III constituency, a contest he pursued for the fourth time. Previously, he had secured victory in the Aizawl East II seat in 2008 and 2013. Lalsawta assumed the role of Mizoram Congress president in 2021.

In a contrasting outcome, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is set to form the government in Mizoram, establishing a substantial lead over its rival MNF with dominance in 27 seats. Meanwhile, MNF trails with only ten seats in hand.
