Mizoram Cracks Down on Illegal Fireworks Ahead of Festive Season
Aizawl: In a bid to ensure a safe and peaceful festive season, the Mizoram government has stepped up its efforts to curb the illegal trade of fireworks and pyrotechnic materials.
On Monday, a joint operation by Mizoram Police led to the seizure of a large cache of banned items, including firecrackers, sky lanterns, and toy guns with dischargeable pellets, from a godown in Aizawl. The haul, estimated to be worth over ₹9.1 lakh, was found in the possession of Sahidul Alam (28), a resident of Karimganj, Assam.
Alam was subsequently arrested, and a case was registered against him under Section 223 of the BNS. Further investigations led to the arrest of another individual, Lalthawmmawia (34), from Chawlhhmun locality. He was found to have imported and stored additional banned materials worth Rs 1.2 lakh.
The crackdown follows a prohibitory order issued by the Mizoram government on November 21, which restricts the sale and import of firecrackers, sky lanterns, and similar items. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate with the enforcement measures and celebrate responsibly.
